ELDR Party Treasurer Bas Eenhoorn visited Athens, Greece, on 22nd February to attend a press conference announcing the formation of a new Greek liberal party, the Liberal Alliance. The party was formally established on 22nd February following the notice of its creation with the Greek High Court. The Liberal Alliance will hold their first congress on 28th April. The party announced that it wants to promote political, economic and social liberalism in Greece and to provide Greek citizens with an alternative to the current mainstream political parties and trends. The Party has a ‘bottom-up’ philosophy and has been created by successful private citizens.

Speaking on behalf of ELDR, Mr Eenhoorn, welcomed the formation of the party and stated ELDR’s support for the initiative. Mr Eenhoorn informed the participants that ELDR currently has 50 member parties and is represented in the European Parliament by the ALDE Group, the third largest political grouping with 106 MEPs. Mr Eenhoorn stressed the importance of attracting and involving young people to the party if liberalism in Greece is to grow.

Elections in Greece could happen as early as May, although it was originally thought that they would take place in 2008. The elections only need to be announced one month prior to voters going to the polls. The threshold for parliamentary representation is 3%.
